CARE & MAINTENANCE

Tent Care

Drying, cleaning and storage matter. These straightforward habits help heavyweight canvas perform season after season.

Canvas is tough — but it rewards good habits. Follow these guidelines and your Yukon Tent will last decades.

Drying

Always dry your tent completely before storing it. Pitch it up at home, or hang it over a line, fence, or rafters until it's bone dry — inside and out. Packing away a damp tent is the #1 cause of mildew and rot.

Sun & UV

Our canvas is treated for UV resistance, but prolonged direct sun will shorten the life of any fabric. When you're set up for an extended stay, pitch under shade where you can, and avoid leaving the tent fully exposed for weeks at a time.

Setup & takedown

  • Clear the ground of sharp rocks, sticks, and debris before pitching
  • Don't force zippers — if one is sticking, check for dirt or fabric caught in the teeth
  • Roll, don't stuff, when packing the canvas away for transport
  • Store the frame separately in its bag to avoid abrasion against the canvas

Cleaning

Brush off dirt and debris with a soft-bristle brush once dry. For stains, spot-clean with cool water and mild soap — never use harsh detergents, bleach, or a washing machine, as these strip the canvas's water-resistant treatment.

Mildew

If mildew appears, mix a solution of water and white vinegar (or a canvas-safe cleaner) and gently scrub the affected area, then dry thoroughly in the sun. Persistent mildew can weaken fibers over time, so address it early.

Leaking seams

New canvas may seep slightly at the seams during the first few rains — this is normal and will seal itself as the threads swell. If leaking persists after the first season, a seam sealer made for canvas (not synthetic) tents will do the job.

Wood stoves & heat sources

  • Always use the stove pipe jack provided — never cut a new hole in the canvas
  • Keep a clear buffer between the stove, pipe, and canvas walls at all times
  • Never leave a wood stove unattended while burning
  • Inspect the stove jack area regularly for scorching or wear
